OC Policy Termination — Template, Deadlines and How to Submit 2026
Most OC policies in Poland renew automatically — if you don't submit a termination on time, the insurer will extend the contract for another year, usually at a price 8–20% higher than the best market offer. To avoid this, you need to know the three basic situations in which you can terminate OC, plus the relevant deadlines and ways to submit the document. All rules stem directly from the Act of 22 May 2003 on compulsory insurance.
Three situations in which you can terminate OC
First, the most common: termination due to the end of the insurance period (art. 28). It can be submitted no later than the day before the policy ends. Second, termination in case of double insurance (art. 28a) — when an automatically renewed policy overlaps with a new one signed at another insurer. Third, termination by the vehicle's new owner (art. 31) — a car buyer can terminate the previous owner's policy at any time during its validity.
OC termination template
The document must contain: policyholder's personal data (name, PESEL, address), vehicle data (registration number, VIN), policy number, contract start and end dates, legal basis for termination (e.g. art. 28 sec. 1), and a handwritten signature. Templates are available on all insurer websites in the "customer service" section. A universal template can also be downloaded from the UFG portal.
Ways to submit termination
Termination can be submitted in three ways: in person at the insurer's office (with a receipt of acceptance), by registered mail to the company's address (the postmark date counts, not the date of receipt), by e-mail with a scan of the signed document to the address given in the policy (some companies also accept an electronic signature via the customer panel). Regardless of the method, keep a copy and proof of dispatch — that's the only evidence you met the deadline.
Most common termination mistakes
The first mistake is being late by one day — a termination posted on the last day before the policy ends is effective, but the day after is not. The second is missing signature or incomplete data (e.g. no VIN). The third — sending by regular instead of registered mail, leaving no proof of dispatch. The fourth — wrong legal basis (e.g. citing art. 28 instead of art. 31 when buying a used car with a policy).
What's next after termination
After effective termination, the policy expires on the end date of the insurance period. Remember that the obligation to have OC is continuous — you must conclude a new contract no later than the day the previous one expires, otherwise UFG imposes a fine. Practical order: 30 days before policy end, compare offers in a calculator, choose a new one, sign termination of the old one and pay for the new — this way you maintain continuous coverage.
Being one day late with termination means the old policy renews automatically. Then a termination under art. 28a can only be submitted after concluding a new one — to avoid double premium.
